Accessibility at the Community Art Hub
Accessibility at the Community Art Hub is an ongoing project, and we are striving to make the arts and our community space as accessible as possible to all kinds of folks. There are countless barriers to accessibility and some are more visible than others. As part of this process, we welcome feedback about access needs, and suggestions on creative ways to increase access in our community space.
In solidarity with disability justice work, we hope this information will help to inform people about what to expect when they come to our space and what we have done to make sure our environment is as accommodating as possible.
If you have any questions, comments or concerns about this guide or accessibility questions/requests please contact us at alterartssociety@gmail.com.
Thank you to the Radical Access Mapping Project for creating and maintaining a free accessibility audit template.
Overview
The Community Art Hub is located on the lower level of the Quadra Village Community Centre. The entrance to the Art Hub is from Dowler street, on the west side of the building, via a wheelchair-accessible ramp or a set of 5 stairs with a railing.
The entrance to the building is through a set of manually-operated double doors. The Community Art Hub space is all on the same level, with no stairs.
There is a wheelchair accessible all-gender washroom through three manual doors and down the hall from the Community Art Hub.
Getting Here
The Community Art Hub is located at 901 Kings Road in Hillside-Quadra, just down the block from Caffe Fantastico in Quadra Village. The entrance to the Art Hub is from Dowler street, on the west side of the building, via a wheelchair-accessible ramp or a set of 5 stairs with a railing.
Kings Road is a designated greenway, and connects with the North-South bicycle route that goes along Vancouver Street to Graham Street, as well as with the route along Haultain via Blackwood Street.
A crosswalk with a pedestrian/cyclist operated traffic light has recently been installed at Blanshard and Kings Road, so it is safe for people to cross Blanshard after disembarking from a southbound bus, or traveling on foot or by bike from the far side of Blanshard street.
The two bus routes with the most frequent service in Victoria pass close to our location: the #4 UVic/Downtown, which stops on Hillside and Quadra, and the #6 Royal Oak Exch/Downtown, which stops on Quadra at Kings Road. It is a short walk from Blanshard Street and Kings Road, which is served by many different bus routes.
We can be reached from within: 210 metres of bus #6 (Quadra at Kings stop), 230 metres of bus #10 (Bay at Dowler) and 400 metres of bus #4 (Hillside at Quadra stop).
There are sidewalks and curb cut-outs from all bus routes, but we are in an industrial area with some unmarked crossings, speed bumps, storm drain grates, and some narrowed sidewalks from power lines.
Parking
Bicycle parking is available on the west side of the Quadra Village Community Centre (access from Dowler street). Additional, more visible bicycle parking is available at the front of the building (access from Kings Road).
There are two accessible parking spaces, one on Dowler St at the top of the ramp, and one on Kings Rd in front of the QVCC entrance. There is street parking for motor vehicles available adjacent to the building on both Dowler Street and Kings Road. There is normally ample vehicle parking available within 100m of the entrance.
There is 2 hour parking available on Dowler Street, and 3 hour parking available on Kings Road.
Please do not park in the Quadra Village Community Centre spaces that can be accessed from the lane on the east side of the building, as they are reserved for community centre staff.

Alter Arts Society is a registered non-profit organization and community initiative by and for artists located on the traditional territories of the Lək̓ʷəŋən people of the Songhees and Xwsepsum (Esquimalt) nations.
Those of us who are uninvited visitors to these territories, respectfully seek opportunities to unlearn oppressive, colonial practices that we have benefited from, and to follow the lead of the Indigenous stewards of these lands. We are committed to questioning existing power structures, supporting the decolonization of our society and institutions, and supporting Indigenous self-determination.
