About Alter Arts Society
We connect artists and audiences by hosting the Out There Art Festival and the Community Art Hub
Alter Arts Society is a registered non-profit organization run by and for artists, with the goal of building community and connecting artists with audiences. All members are encouraged to get involved in the organization's projects in ways that will be enjoyable and help them to grow their skills.
Our mandate is to make the world a better place by creating and supporting artistic, educational, environmental, and social activities and events. We are committed to advancing equity and sustainability, supporting artists in developing their abilities, sharing knowledge, and building community.
Our Principles
Alter Arts Society acknowledges that inequities exist even in spaces like ours, that are committed to social justice and equity. We will work hard to be inclusive and create a safe space whenever we come together.
Collectively, we commit to:
Cultivating an open and welcoming community.
- We will consciously create a welcoming environment free from oppression and discrimination, and actively work to empower members of equity-seeking groups and people with lived experience of marginalization. Everyone is welcome in our space, and at our events. Every community member is valued, and has something to contribute.
Radical interdependence, sharing, and mutual aid.
- We actively encourage sharing and mutual aid, given freely without expectations. Gifts of knowledge, companionship, encouragement, performance, interpersonal connections, and physical objects are encouraged. We also value compensating people fairly for their time and their creations, and will work collaboratively to support artists and creators who wish to unlock the monetary value in their work.
Caring for one another and our shared spaces.
- Our community is built on respect for one another and the spaces that we all share. We are interdependent with the people and places around us, and commit to having a positive impact in all of our physical and social interactions. We request explicit consent, and respect one another’s boundaries.
Building community through radical participation.
- We believe that the best way to build community is by working together towards a shared goal. Everyone is invited to work. Everyone is invited to play, and to help grow and sustain our community.
- We will consciously create a welcoming environment free from oppression and discrimination, and actively work to empower members of equity-seeking groups and people with lived experience of marginalization. Everyone is welcome in our space, and at our events. Every community member is valued, and has something to contribute.

Alter Arts Society
Making the world a better place, one art project at a time.
Alter Arts Society is a registered non-profit organization.
Alter Arts Society is a registered non-profit organization and community initiative by and for artists located on the traditional territories of the Lək̓ʷəŋən people of the Songhees and Xwsepsum (Esquimalt) nations.
Those of us who are uninvited visitors to these territories, respectfully seek opportunities to unlearn oppressive, colonial practices that we have benefited from, and to follow the lead of the Indigenous stewards of these lands. We are committed to questioning existing power structures, supporting the decolonization of our society and institutions, and supporting Indigenous self-determination.
